Snoring occurs due to narrowing of airways of our mouth, nose or throat; the factors responsible for this narrowing might include old injuries like breaking of nose, allergies, anatomical abnormalities or sinus infections. In this article, we’ll be discussing about some herbs that can help in controlling snoring.
1. Mint and eucalyptus:
Eucalyptus possesses decongestant like properties i.e. it can help in clearing the mucus buildup and open airways. The active chemical found in mint is menthol. Menthol is also known for being a natural decongestant. Menthol works by loosening the phlegm and soothing the sinuses and throat. The essential oil extracted from mint and eucalyptus when used in a combination is known to offer extraordinary benefits in correcting the narrowed airways. To stop snoring in sleep, put 3 to 4 drops of each of these two essential oils on your pillow. You can also put these oils inside the air diffuser and place it near your bed. Rubbing mint oil and eucalyptus oil on the neck, back and throat by mixing them with almond oil can also work as a remedy for snoring.
The herb fenugreek is also known for its ability to work as a decongestant. Fenugreek works by softening and dissolving the hardened and accumulated mucus; this herb can also cleanse our lymphatic system effectively. Herbalists recommend use of fenugreek for treating several conditions, which include sinus congestion, respiratory infections, excess mucus buildup and bronchial catarrh. Each of these conditions can contribute to snoring; this makes fenugreek a suitable remedy for snoring. You can take the herb in form of capsules or herbal tea.
3. Marjoram and thyme:
Both marjoram and thyme are culinary herbs, but they are also frequently used for medicinal purposes. Thyme is used primarily as treatment of certain respiratory conditions. Marjoram, on the other hand, can successfully relieve bronchitis, asthma, coughs and colds. For getting rid of the snoring habit, you can inhale the essential oils extracted from these herbs. Having a tea prepared by brewing 2-3 oz each these two herbs into boiling water regularly can also offer similar benefits.
